Pasig City — October 18, 2024.
The Philippine Paint and Coatings Association, Inc. (PPCAI) made waves in a celebration that blended camaraderie, competition, and the festive spirit of Oktoberfest in their first-ever Beer Pong Tournament. Held at the trendy Boudica Café Bar in Pasig City, the event ran from 6:00 PM to midnight, providing an unforgettable night of cold brews, energetic vibes, and plenty of laughter.
In a bid to foster stronger ties within the paint and coatings industry, the event was masterfully organized by Director Alix Reyes of Chemrez and Treasurer Carl Hu of Amstar, with invaluable support from Lynette Palma of Reda Chem and JV Balane of J-Van. A total of 54 attendees representing 29 companies were welcomed with flights of Carabao Craft Beer, featuring a smooth blend of IPA and Pilsner, along with complimentary rounds of pale pilsen, making the night both a celebration of the industry and Oktoberfest’s iconic beer culture.
Adding to the spirited ambiance was DJ Andreas Sto. Domingo, whose selection of 80s and 90s hits kept the energy vibrant and the dance floor moving. The music's nostalgic beats carried attendees back to eras of disco fever and early hip-hop, weaving moments of lightheartedness between the fierce rounds of beer pong.
Zero Shop Talk, All Fun
As attendees from various sectors of the paint and coatings industry mingled, there was a refreshing absence of business discussions. "Tonight's about camaraderie, not commerce," said Alix Reyes with a smile, setting the tone for the evening. The mood was buoyant, a lively departure from boardroom conversations as participants gathered around the beer pong tables, determined to win bragging rights, special prizes, and, of course, a few competitive rounds of beer.
Tournament Showdown
The tournament featured a simple yet thrilling game flow:
First Round: 12 teams competed in 6 matches, with the winners advancing.
Wildcard Round: The 6 losing teams were given a second shot, with the top 2 performers moving on.
Quarterfinals: 8 teams faced off, and 4 emerged victorious.
Semifinals: The competition tightened, as 4 teams were whittled down to the final two
Finals: The top two semifinalists battled for the Championship, while the losing semifinalists played for third place.
This straightforward yet inclusive system ensured everyone had a fair shot at taking home a prize, making the competition both engaging and accessible.
Victors of the Night
After several rounds of nail-biting competition, the championship team emerged as Selwyn Bunao of Connell and Dianne Ruth Mendoza of Pacific Resins, walking away with the grand prize of P5,000. The dynamic pair played with precision and teamwork, proving that even beer pong has its champions.
The 2nd Place prize of P3,000 was awarded to Jayson Medrano and Jerick Enriquez from Aveo Chem, while the 3rd Place title, along with P2,000, went to Christine Quijano of Transworld and Krizzanne F. Fajilan of CPI. Taking home the quirky 4th Place prize — four packs of Nongshim Noodles — were Willy Yao of Himmel and Divine Sopan of Global Bosny.
Celebrating More Than Victory
In addition to the main competition, several light-hearted awards were given to recognize the evening's standout participants. The Sharpshooter title went to Dianne Ruth Mendoza, whose laser focus made her a formidable competitor at the table. Tony Floro of Chemwealth took home the "Magaling Gumiling" award, acknowledged for his lively moves that captivated the crowd, while Jerick of Aveochem won the "Pinakamaligaling" title for his strategic gameplay.
Perhaps the most celebrated accolade of the night was the Best Sore Loser award, humorously given to Carl Hu of Amstar, who embraced the spirit of friendly competition with humor and grace. The Best Team award was snagged by Jocelyn Basuel and her teammate Athine of Sealbond, who impressed with their synergy on the table.
A Night to Remember
As the night came to a close, attendees left Boudica Café Bar with new memories, new friends, and stronger connections within the industry. The event was hailed as a tremendous success, not only for the fun it provided but also for the bonds it strengthened among professionals who often meet only in formal settings.
PPCAI’s first beer pong tournament showed that beyond business, there’s value in coming together over shared experiences — especially when those experiences involve cold beers, lighthearted competition, and a vibrant Oktoberfest celebration. The organization is already looking forward to making this event a new annual tradition, ensuring that this beer pong tournament will remain a beloved highlight of PPCAI's social calendar for years to come. 🖌️🖌️🖌️
